Charite is the Medical school and university hospital of the Berlin Humboldt University. It is the largest university hospital in Europe and a large business enterprise using state-of-the-art data processing and management technology in medicine and administration. Charite is a medical complex with three campuses: "Campus Virchow- Klinikum", completed in 1998 and one of the most modern university hospitals in Europe; "Campus Mitte", Germany's oldest medical treatment facility still located on its original site; and "Campus Buch", which provides the link to a large national research facility. Charite is the only medical school in Europe whose name is both a virtue and a mission: charity.

The Institute of Transfusion Medicine of Charite is a Tissue Centre since 1956 , a Blood Donor Centre since 1969 with autologous blood donor Department and a Therapy Unit since 1986. Its research fields comprise microcirculation in various diseases, production of artificial circulation and the validation of nutritional supplements. Blood banking procedures are subject to the strictest quality criteria.
